Preparing Your Home for Hurricane Season: Exterior Maintenance Checklist
By Shepherd Window Cleaning · Updated 2026
Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30 in South Florida — and preparing your property isn’t just about plywood and shutters. The exterior condition of your home directly affects how it weathers a storm and how quickly you can recover afterward.
Here’s what we recommend after 10+ years of helping Palm Beach County homeowners prepare for and recover from hurricane season.
Before the Season (May–June)
🪟 Windows & Glass
Professional cleaning to remove all salt deposits and mineral buildup. Clean glass is easier to inspect for cracks and seal integrity.
Check all window seals and caulking. Worn seals allow water intrusion during wind-driven rain.
Clean window tracks and weep holes — clogged tracks prevent proper drainage during heavy rain.
🏠 Roof
Soft wash to remove all algae and debris. A clean roof lets you spot damage, loose tiles, and compromised flashing before a storm tests them.
Clear all debris from roof valleys and around vents.
Inspect for cracked or loose tiles.
🌧️ Gutters & Drainage
Clean all gutters and downspouts. Clogged gutters cause water to back up under roofing material during heavy rain.
Verify downspouts direct water away from the foundation.
🧹 Exterior Surfaces
Pressure wash driveways, patios, and walkways. Removing mold and algae before the season reduces post-storm cleanup.
Inspect and clean screen enclosures — damaged screens should be repaired before wind season.
🧱 Pavers
Seal any unsealed pavers. Sealant prevents water from saturating the base material, which reduces shifting and sinking during extended heavy rain.
Re-sand joints to stabilize the paver surface.

During the Season (June–November)
After each storm, inspect glass for cracks, chips, and seal failures before resuming normal use.
Clear debris from roof, gutters, and drainage paths as soon as it’s safe to do so.
Document any damage with photos before beginning cleanup — your insurance company will need this.
After a Storm
Professional window cleaning to remove storm debris, salt spray, and contaminants before they bond to glass.
Pressure washing to remove sand, mud, and organic debris from driveways, patios, and walls.
Roof inspection and cleaning to assess any damage and remove debris before mold sets in.
The Investment That Pays Off
Exterior maintenance before hurricane season is insurance that doesn’t require a claim. Clean gutters prevent water damage. Sealed pavers resist shifting. Clean windows reveal damage early. And a well-maintained exterior recovers faster and costs less to repair after a storm.
